2. Properties
Butyl Acetate has the chemical formula C6H12O2. This is an organic compound with a characteristic aroma of ripe bananas, so it is often called aromatic gasoline.
It is a clear, colorless liquid with a fruity aroma similar to that of a ripe banana.
N-BAC is soluble in all organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycol ethers, linear hydrocarbons but sparingly soluble in water.
N-BAC also dissolves cellulose nitrate, polymers, resins and oils. It is an important solvent in the paint, paper, and chemical industries.
Density: 0.88 g/cm3
Water solubility: 0.7 g/100ml (20oC).
3. Production
Butyl acetate is usually produced through the esterification of an isomer of butanol and acetic acid with sulfuric acid as a catalyst under running conditions.
4. Application
N-Butyl acetate is an important solvent in the paint industry. It has good solubility of cellulose nitrate, resin, polymer, oil and fat.
In addition, Butyl Acetate is combined with N-butanol to increase the resistance to turbidity of other compounds, increase the solubility in many cases, and reduce the viscosity of the solution.
In pharmaceutical preparation, Butyl Acetate is used as an extracting agent.
Used as a synthetic fruit flavor in foods such as candy, ice cream, cheese, packaged foods.
In addition, Butyl Acetate is a component of detergents thanks to its ability to absorb water, resist hydrolysis, and have good solubility.
